Finding wonder in the little things we so often overlook.

By Ivy Selene | Ivy Selene Writes

Have you ever stopped to think about how much magic happens in an ordinary day?

Not the sort of magic involving elaborate rituals, bubbling cauldrons, ancient spell books or dancing naked under a full moon (although, each to their own, witches!). I'm talking about the little things. The moments we often overlook because we're too busy getting on with life.

A warm cup of tea on a chilly morning. The smell of something lovely cooking in the kitchen. A favourite song coming on the radio just when you need it. A conversation that makes you laugh until your tummy hurts. A candle flickering quietly in the corner of a room.

Perhaps we've become so caught up in waiting for something wonderful to happen that we've forgotten to notice the wonderful things already happening around us.

And that, my lovelies, is where I think a little everyday magic begins.

We've forgotten how to notice

Modern life has a habit of keeping us busy.

There are always jobs to do, messages to answer, washing to put away, shopping to organise and a hundred other little responsibilities demanding our attention.

We rush through mornings, count down until evenings and look forward to the weekend. Then the weekend disappears, and we're back to Monday wondering where the time went.

Sound familiar?

Somewhere along the way, we can forget to actually enjoy the life we're living.

We wait for holidays, special occasions, birthdays, celebrations and big milestones before allowing ourselves to feel excited or grateful.

But what about Tuesday afternoon? What about a quiet Sunday morning? What about those seemingly unremarkable moments that make up most of our lives?

They're worth celebrating too.

I think there's something rather magical about learning to slow down enough to notice them.

The magic of a morning cuppa

Now, I don't know about you, but I'm quite fond of a morning cuppa.

There's something comforting about wrapping your hands around a warm mug, especially when November is doing its best to remind us that summer is well and truly behind us.

For me, these little moments are an opportunity to pause.

Perhaps I'll sit quietly for a few minutes, watch the world outside, gather my thoughts or simply enjoy not having to do anything for a little while.

It's not complicated. It's not an elaborate spiritual practice.

But it's a moment of being present.

We don't always need to light incense, lay out crystals or consult the moon to connect with ourselves. Sometimes we just need to put our phones down, take a breath and enjoy the cup of tea before it goes cold.

Although, let's be honest, witches are perfectly capable of making a cup of tea and forgetting about it completely!

There's magic in the home

As someone who loves cooking for family, I think the kitchen is one of the loveliest places to find everyday magic.

There's something special about preparing a meal for the people you love. Chopping vegetables, adding herbs and spices, stirring a pot and filling the house with familiar smells.

It's an act of love, even when you're just making something simple.

Kitchen witchery has never needed to be complicated in my eyes. It's about the intention we put into ordinary activities.

Cooking with love. Creating a welcoming home. Lighting a candle because it makes the room feel cosy. Putting fresh flowers on the table simply because they make you smile.

These little things matter.

Our homes don't have to look like something from a glossy magazine. They don't need to be perfect, spotless or beautifully styled.

They need to feel like somewhere we can exhale.

Somewhere we can be ourselves.

Somewhere we feel safe, loved and comfortable enough to wear our favourite pyjamas and ignore the world for a bit.

And there's a fair amount of magic in that!

Nature has a way of reminding us

One of the things I love about following the seasons is the gentle reminder that everything has its own rhythm.

Look at November.

The trees are shedding their leaves, the evenings are drawing in and nature is slowly settling into a quieter season.

There's no frantic attempt to hold on to summer. No panic about what comes next. Nature simply changes, releases and rests.

Perhaps we could learn something from that.

We don't have to be constantly productive. We don't have to be achieving something every minute of every day. We don't have to keep every part of our lives looking green and flourishing.

Sometimes we need to let things go.

Sometimes we need to rest.

And sometimes we need to accept that we're in a quieter chapter of our lives, without feeling that we're somehow falling behind.

The seasons remind us that change is natural, rest is necessary and new beginnings will come when their time arrives.

You don't need a spell for everything

Now, don't get me wrong. I love a little ritual, a meaningful moon phase and anything that makes me feel connected to the spiritual side of life.

But I've come to believe that we sometimes put too much pressure on ourselves to make everything magical.

We look for signs, search for meanings and wait for the universe to send us some enormous flashing neon message.

Yet perhaps the magic is much closer than we think.

It's in the kindness we show someone having a difficult day.

It's in choosing to forgive ourselves for not getting everything done.

It's in laughing with friends, checking in on somebody we love and finding the courage to start again.

It's in recognising that we deserve the same compassion we so freely give to others.

And it's in remembering that we don't have to be anything other than ourselves.

A little gratitude, a little intention and a willingness to notice the good things can change the way we experience an ordinary day.

That, to me, is everyday magic.

A little everyday magic to try

If life has been feeling a little hectic lately, why not try creating your own little moments of magic?

Nothing complicated. No shopping list of crystals required!

Here are five simple things you could try:

  1. Begin your morning with intention. Before reaching for your phone, take a moment to decide how you want to approach the day.

  2. Light a candle. Not because you need a special occasion, but simply because you deserve a little atmosphere and comfort.

  3. Spend time outside. Notice the trees, the sky, the changing seasons and the little things you usually walk past.

  4. Do something kind. Send a message, offer encouragement or make somebody smile. Kindness has a beautiful way of creating its own magic.

  5. End your day with gratitude. Think of three little things that made you smile. They don't have to be enormous achievements. Sometimes getting through a difficult day is enough.

You might be surprised at how much there is to appreciate when you start looking.

A final thought from this Crone

I think one of the loveliest things about getting older is beginning to understand that life isn't just about the big moments.

It's about all the little ones in between.

The cups of tea, the family meals, the conversations, the laughter, the quiet evenings, the unexpected kindness and even those wonderfully ordinary days when absolutely nothing exciting happens.

We spend so much of our lives waiting for something magical that we can forget we're already surrounded by little pieces of it.

So, my lovelies, don't wait for the full moon, the perfect moment or the next chapter before allowing yourself to enjoy the life you have today.

Light the candle.

Make the tea.

Cook the meal.

Wear the lovely perfume.

Put on your favourite pyjamas.

Laugh a little louder.

And remember to give yourself permission to enjoy the ordinary.

Because sometimes, the greatest magic of all is simply being here, living, loving and finding beauty in the everyday.

A little Crone wisdom to leave you with:

Don't spend your life waiting for extraordinary moments. Learn to recognise the extraordinary hiding inside your ordinary days.

With a little moonlight, a sprinkle of everyday magic and lots of love,

A little question for you

What ordinary little thing brings a touch of magic into your day?

Is it your morning cuppa, cooking for loved ones, a walk in nature, lighting a candle or simply having a few precious moments to yourself?

I'd love to hear. Sometimes the smallest things have the biggest meaning.
