If Your Soul Had a Cottage, What Would It Look Like?

Sometimes I like to imagine that my soul lives in a little cottage somewhere beyond the reach of clocks, deadlines, and busy schedules.

Not a real cottage, but a place that exists in that quiet corner of the imagination where truth often hides.

Whenever life feels noisy or overwhelming, I find myself returning there.

Perhaps your soul has a cottage too.

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine it.

Don't overthink it. Simply notice what appears.

Is it tucked deep within an ancient forest where moss carpets the ground beneath towering trees?

Does it sit beside a windswept coastline, with seabirds calling overhead and waves singing against the shore?

Perhaps it rests among rolling hills bathed in golden sunlight, or at the edge of a misty moor where the heather dances in the breeze.

The landscape matters.

Often, it reveals what we are longing for.

A forest may speak of a need for protection, solitude, or healing.

A coastline might whisper of freedom, change, and emotional release.

A mountain retreat could suggest a desire for perspective and clarity.

There are no right answers.

Only invitations.

Step Through the Garden Gate

Now walk towards your cottage.

Notice the path beneath your feet.

Is it lined with wildflowers?

Twisting ivy?

Smooth river stones?

What grows in the garden?

Lavender bursting with fragrance?

A tangle of herbs drying in the sun?

Rows of vegetables lovingly tended?

Or perhaps it is delightfully wild and untamed.

Our inner gardens often mirror the parts of ourselves we nurture and the parts we have neglected.

Pay attention to what flourishes there.

And what does not.

Open the Door

As you step inside, notice how the cottage feels.

Not how it looks.

How it feels.

Is there a crackling fire in the hearth?

Soft blankets draped over cosy armchairs?

Shelves overflowing with books?

Sunlight spilling through old glass windows?

The objects within the cottage are often symbols.

The books may represent wisdom you long to explore.

The fire may represent passion or comfort.

The worn armchair may suggest a need for rest.

A large table may signify connection and community.

Trust whatever appears.

Your soul rarely speaks in words.

It prefers symbols, feelings, and stories.

The Room You Didn't Expect

Now imagine there is a door inside the cottage that you have never opened before.

You don't know where it leads.

When you open it, what do you find?

Perhaps it is a creative studio filled with paints and journals.

A moonlit library.

A greenhouse overflowing with medicinal herbs.

A music room.

A sanctuary.

An empty room waiting to become something new.

This unexpected room can reveal hidden desires, forgotten dreams, or parts of yourself that are asking for attention.

Sometimes the things we need most are the things we have quietly placed behind closed doors.

What Is Your Cottage Trying to Tell You?

The beauty of this exercise is that there are no wrong answers.

Your soul's cottage belongs entirely to you.

It changes as you change.

Its rooms grow and shift with each season of your life.

What matters is not creating a perfect image.

What matters is listening.

Listening to the forests you long to wander.

The books you want to read.

The fires you need to sit beside.

The gardens you wish to cultivate.

And the rooms waiting patiently to be discovered.

Because sometimes, beautiful soul, the place you are searching for isn't somewhere in the world at all.

Sometimes it is already within you.

A Gentle Reflection

Take a few minutes with your journal and explore these questions:

  • Where is your soul's cottage located?

  • What grows in its garden?

  • What is your favourite room?

  • What object immediately catches your attention?

  • What was behind the unexpected door?

  • What do you think your cottage is trying to tell you right now?

You may be surprised by the answers.

After all, the most magical journeys often begin with a single step through an imaginary door.

With warmth and wonder,

Blessed Be, Beautiful Souls
